Skálanes Nature Reserve

65.2942, -13.7055

Closest settlement: Seyðisfjörður

We are seeking applicants for our pilot program in spring 2022. The program is based around a group residency in eastern Iceland, at Skálanes, a nature and heritage research & educational center. Skálanes is a 3000-acre nature reserve on the banks of Seyðisfjörður, an inlet of the North Atlantic. Once a traditional Icelandic sheep farm, the land is now regenerating and moving towards re-forestation, while serving as a base camp for research on the surrounding area. Facilities at Skálanes include a fully equipped kitchen, wet and dry labs for research, indoor group meeting areas, and beds for 18, as well as a wealth of local knowledge and an extensive library of past research conducted on site. From the farmhouse, it’s possible to hike or snowshoe from the ocean directly into the highlands extending up to 3000 feet above sea level.
