AIR Træna
From July 20 to August 20, I’ll be participating in an artist residency on Træna, a municipality of 1000 Norwegian islands in the Norwegian Sea. I’ll be exploring communication in the modern world: the value of slowing down, what we’ve gained through technology, and what we’re in danger of losing.
I’ll follow in the footsteps of Alma Sandøy and Theodor Holmen, siblings born and raised on Træna, who never met. Theodor left Norway at 18, never coming back home and eventually ending up in Hawaii for a time. He and Alma exchanged letters for decades, sharing their lives with each other. Theodor sent Alma the first camera in Træna, and her photos are now on display around the island and in the museum. Every day I’m here, I’ll handwrite a letter to my brother on Oahu. You can find them all here.

Want to contribute to the project? I’m looking for people interested in sharing a piece of their lives through writing and connecting with local Træna residents through letters. If you’re interested in being a correspondent, for a single letter or more, read your handwritten invitation, and provide your details below! You’ll receive further instructions and a writing prompt via e-mail.
